“This book is yet again different from the previous two in the series, but it’s a satisfying read nonetheless.
Elathlo is froma different world, a harsher world where strength matters more than all else. Being brought to Erdem and training under Kemen is culture shock for him on multiple levels. Watching him grow from a terrified boy into a confident young man, through the various trials he had to face, was uniquely satisfying.
And of course seeing Kemen get even more of the happy ending he deserved was just The Best.”
“Reader thoughts: I loved seeing Elathlo’s confidence grow as he got to know Kemen and Erdem better. Kind words and good food do a lot for a soul, and he has his own ideas about how the nations could work together. Elathlo matured enough to realize violence is a worse answer than negotiating and why that was so. Kemen is so full of kindness and honor and hard work. He makes Elathlo train hard and learn much, but he always treats Elathlo with the utmost patience and trust. “He is cunning but not devious.” Ria and Lani are great, too! Their roles aren’t central but still important. Kemen isn’t perfect, and he needs his friends. They were fully-realized characters I would have liked to see more of, but this worked.
Writer thoughts: The actual dangers in this book were side plots to the main story/conflict. Elathlo and his grandfather were the main concern, and what it really takes to be a leader and earn respect. This means this book isn’t an adventure with some complicated relationships thrown in. This is a book about relationships (family and cultural) with a few adventures thrown in.
It’s most interesting because book 1 was heavy on fighting and crowning the rightful king. Book 2 was mostly about a love story and the trust between two people. Book 3 is different again, showing what happens when cultures clash and when grandsons aren’t anything like what a grandfather expects/wants. So, political adventure, romance, then coming-of-age? And the author makes this combination work well in her trilogy.
This trilogy is all first person, which is my favorite pov. So, I like that part, too.”
